fourth reading response

"Introduction, How Control Exists After Decentralization"

I enjoyed reading this article because it helped me understand why a "computerized information management" system exists. I did not know that one was made to withstand nuclear attacks that target centralized hubs. I found it interesting to read about the breakdown of packets and the beginning of new packet-switching technology. It made me contemplate how much technology has changed to make the internet what it is today. As the article stated, only a few hundred computers were participating as hosts at the startup of the internet, and it's interesting to think about what the internet has come to today. As the article continues, I found it interesting to read about what we talked about at the beginning of class, TCP/IP. The analogy of the highway system and protocols made me further understand how protocols work. I learned that the converting of domain names to IP addresses is called resolution, and how to follow branches of control one must start with the top-level domain. I found the story of "etoy.com" interesting because of how simple the resolution would have been to turn off the site. The article made me think about how communication protocol is very similar to most other aspects of life; there must be two sides and they both must speak the same language in order to communicate effectively. If an outside force hinders this communication then it is likely that technology will reject what is trying to happen.
